Star Group, Satellite Television for Asian Region, is a wholly owned subsidiary of the News Corporation. Star Group has flourishing operations in Asia, and so in India. Now, it is the most powerful and premier Television and Media network in the entire region of Asia continent, reaching more than 300 million viewers, in more than 50 countries and is watched by over 177 million people every week controlling over 25,000 hours of original content a year.

History

STAR was set up in 1990 by Hutchison Whampoa, with broadcasts commencing in 1991. In 1993 Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation purchased 63.6% of STAR for over USD 500 million, followed by the purchase of the remaining 34.6% in July 1995.

In 1994 STAR removed BBC World from the network following demands from the government of the People's Republic of China. It is alleged that the PRC government was unhappy with BBC coverage and threatened to block Star TV in the huge mainland Chinese market if the BBC was not withdrawn.
